University theater: the Theatre of the UVIC
The academic year 2014-2015 marked the 10th anniversary of my involvement in the artistic direction of the various activities and shows of the Aula de Teatre (Theatre Workshop) of the University of Vic, at the invitation of its director, Dolors Rusiñol. This collaboration began as a result of my participation in previous productions as a director’s assistant and, initially, as an actress. I was fortunate enough to experience the inaugural year of the workshop (academic year 1993-1994) when I was studying for my degree in teaching and education and we put on a production of The Good Doctor, by Neil Simon. Since then we have experienced all sorts of events, activities and productions with all those who have been involved in the project. University theatre is a space for research and growth of great artistic and educational value which goes somewhat unnoticed. Over the years we have been able to take risks with our own creations, which have constituted an important step towards the projects that each of us is currently involved in. We have also been able to learn a lot from the joint direction of various productions and from the collaborations with other professionals. We have seen participants of the workshop enter the professional performing arts sector or put their stage experience to use in other personal or professional areas. We have seen them grow and find excitement, enter the world of culture through theatre, broaden their horizons, leave their comfort zone and meet new challenges. We have seen great friendships blossom and couples meet. We know that other university workshops could say exactly the same thing; the fact is that university theatre is quietly going about doing a fantastic job.
